EAAs and BCAAs are not interchangeable

This is the single most useful thing to understand before comparing prices, because the two tables above list different products: the first is EAA powders, the second is BCAA powders.

We put a listing in the BCAA table when its name says BCAA and does not mention EAA or essential amino acids. A name that only says “amino” or “amino acids” stays in the EAA table, so check the label for which one it really is.

BCAAs are three amino acids — leucine, isoleucine and valine — usually sold in a 2:1:1 ratio. EAAs are the nine amino acids the body cannot make itself, a set that includes all three BCAAs. So an EAA product contains the BCAAs; a BCAA product contains roughly a third of the EAAs.

That difference is why a straight price comparison can mislead here. A cheap BCAA and a pricier EAA at similar € per 100 g are not the same purchase, and the cheaper one is not automatically the better value. Our guide on EAAs versus BCAAs goes through where each one is and is not worth considering.

The question worth asking first

Before comparing tubs at all, it is worth asking whether you need either. Amino acids are the components of protein, and a whey or other complete protein powder already supplies the full set — usually at a much lower cost per gram of amino acids than a dedicated EAA product. For most people eating adequate protein, a separate amino supplement is duplicating something they already have.

That is not an argument that nobody should buy them; there are situations and preferences where a light, easy-sipping drink suits better than a shake. It is an argument for checking the protein powder table first, because at a median of about €3.90 per 100 g for protein against roughly €8.38 for EAA and €6.43 for BCAA, the comparison is not close on cost.

What to read on the label

Check whether it is EAA or BCAA, and at what total dose per serving. Product names are not reliable on this point — plenty of tubs marketed on their amino content are one when you would assume the other. A few listings in this table are neither: single amino acids such as arginine, sold for pump and circulation rather than as an essential-amino or branched-chain product, turn up under the same category. Check for a full breakdown with amounts rather than a blend that lists ingredients without quantities. And check what else is in it: many products in this category are largely flavouring, electrolytes and sweetener by weight, which changes what the per-100 g figure is actually measuring.

What we will and will not tell you it does

We do not attach performance or recovery claims to amino acid products. Where a benefit is formally authorised for an ingredient we quote the approved wording exactly; where it is not, we describe the product for what it is and leave the judgement to you. For this category that means the useful things we can offer are what is in the tub, what it costs per serving, and how it compares to the alternatives — including the alternative of buying protein instead.

Frequently asked questions

How much do EAAs and BCAAs cost in Malta?

It varies by brand and formula — see the live table above for today's exact range and median. The table contains both product types, which is worth keeping in mind when comparing.

What is the difference between EAAs and BCAAs?

BCAAs are three amino acids — leucine, isoleucine and valine — usually in a 2:1:1 ratio. EAAs are the nine amino acids the body cannot make itself, a set that includes all three BCAAs. So an EAA product contains the BCAAs, while a BCAA product contains roughly a third of the EAAs.

Is a cheaper BCAA better value than a pricier EAA?

Not necessarily — they are not the same purchase. Comparing them on price per 100 g alone treats a partial amino profile and a complete one as equivalent, which they are not.

Is everything in this table actually an EAA or BCAA product?

Nearly all of it, but not quite everything. A small number of listings are single amino acids such as arginine, sold for pump and circulation rather than as an essential-amino or branched-chain product. Product names are not reliable here — check the ingredient list rather than assuming from the category alone.

Do I need an amino acid supplement at all?

Often not. Amino acids are the components of protein, and a whey or other complete protein powder already supplies the full set, usually at a much lower cost per gram of amino acids — see the live protein-powder table for the comparison.

How often are these prices updated?

Every morning, from each retailer's own public storefront, normalised to € per 100 g so pack sizes compare fairly.
