It doesn’t — and the reason comes down to a bit of label maths that most people never do. Citrulline vs citrulline malate: not the same figure
L-citrulline is an amino acid. Citrulline malate is a different, related ingredient: it is citrulline chemically bound to malic acid (the “malate” part), and it is the more common form found in pre-workout because of how it behaves in manufacturing. The catch is that when a label states “Citrulline Malate 8,000 mg”, that 8,000 mg figure is the combined weight of the citrulline and the malate together — not 8,000 mg of pure citrulline. Some of that weight is malic acid, which is a different compound with its own (much more modest) role, mostly linked to energy metabolism rather than anything specific to training.
This is the single most misunderstood label distinction in the category, and it is easy to miss because both ingredients are usually printed simply as “citrulline malate” with no further explanation. A plain L-citrulline product, by contrast, states the citrulline amount directly — no dilution to account for.
The ratio problem: why “citrulline malate” labels vary
Citrulline malate is conventionally sold at a 2:1 ratio — meaning, by weight, roughly two parts citrulline to one part malate. At a true 2:1 ratio, citrulline makes up about two-thirds (roughly 66–67%) of the total citrulline malate weight, with malic acid making up the rest.
Here is where it gets more complicated for consumers: a published review of citrulline malate supplementation found that many commercial products do not actually reach the 2:1 ratio their labels imply. Testing found some products closer to a 1.6:1 ratio, and others as low as 1.1:1 — meaning the citrulline content can be meaningfully lower than the “2:1” branding on the tub suggests, even before you do the maths on the total weight. In other words, there are two layers of dilution to be aware of: the malate portion is baked into any citrulline malate product by design, and on top of that, the actual ratio a given product delivers may not match what is advertised.
How to calculate your actual citrulline content
The good news is that the maths is simple once you know the ratio. If a product states its ratio (for example “Citrulline Malate 8,000 mg (2:1)”), the formula is:
Citrulline (mg) = total citrulline malate (mg) × [ratio ÷ (ratio + 1)]
Worked through at a few common ratios, an 8,000 mg citrulline malate serving breaks down as follows:
- True 2:1 ratio: 8,000 mg × (2 ÷ 3) ≈ 5,330 mg of actual citrulline (the rest, roughly 2,670 mg, is malate).
- 1.6:1 ratio (found in some tested commercial products): 8,000 mg × (1.6 ÷ 2.6) ≈ 4,920 mg of actual citrulline.
- 1.1:1 ratio (the lowest ratio found in the same testing): 8,000 mg × (1.1 ÷ 2.1) ≈ 4,190 mg of actual citrulline.
That is a swing of over 1,100 mg of actual citrulline from the same 8,000 mg label figure, purely depending on the ratio the manufacturer actually used. If a label states no ratio at all, you cannot back-calculate the citrulline content with any confidence — that alone is worth treating as a transparency red flag when you are comparing products.
Why this matters when comparing products
Once you know to look for the ratio, comparing two pre-workouts becomes far more meaningful. A product listing “L-Citrulline 4,000 mg” plainly is giving you more actual citrulline than a product listing “Citrulline Malate 6,000 mg (2:1)” (which works out to roughly 4,000 mg of citrulline once you subtract the malate) — even though the second number on the tub looks bigger. Neither format is dishonest by itself; citrulline malate is a legitimate, well-established ingredient form. The point is simply that the two label formats are not measuring the same thing, and a bigger printed number does not automatically mean more citrulline.
Research reviewing citrulline dosing has most commonly used acute doses around 8 g of citrulline malate, while some dose-response work found that higher pure-citrulline intakes (in the 10–15 g range) produced meaningfully higher peak citrulline levels in the blood than lower amounts. - Compare products on their calculated citrulline content, not the raw citrulline malate number on the front of the tub.
