Supplement Prices in Malta: What You Should Actually Pay

Supplement prices in Malta are hard to compare because nobody sells the same size tub. One shop lists a 900 g pouch, the next a 2.3 kg bag, and the sticker price tells you almost nothing about which is better value. This page fixes that. We automatically collect the listed prices from Maltese supplement retailers’ own online stores and convert every one of them to euro per 100 g, so you can see what things actually cost.

The tables update automatically and include our competitors. When somebody else in Malta is cheaper than us, they appear above us — that is the whole point of publishing it.

Why we compare per 100 g, not per tub

Pack sizes across Maltese shops range from about 300 g to 5 kg. A €25 pouch and a €120 sack can easily work out at the same value, or be three times apart, and you cannot tell by looking. Dividing by weight is the only comparison that survives contact with reality.

Two honest caveats about that number. First, per 100 g of powder is not the same as per 100 g of protein — a concentrate at roughly 75 % protein and an isolate at roughly 90 % will not compare like for like, so treat the ranking as a shortlist and check the label for the protein content. Second, we deliberately exclude mass gainers and carbohydrate powders. They are mostly maltodextrin, they are cheap per 100 g, and including them would put them at the top of a “cheapest protein” table while being a completely different product.

If you want to run the numbers on a specific product yourself, including cost per serving and cost per 100 g of protein, use our supplement value calculator.

Is it actually cheaper to order from mainland Europe?

This is the single most common thing Maltese lifters say about supplement pricing — that ordering from Germany or the Netherlands is dramatically cheaper. It is worth separating what is true from what is assumed.

There is no customs duty, and no import VAT, on an order from another EU country. Malta is inside the EU customs union, and the European Union is explicit that no customs duties are payable when goods move between EU countries (European Union — Customs). For distance selling within the EU, the seller charges VAT at the destination country’s rate and settles it through the One Stop Shop, rather than you paying anything extra when the parcel arrives (Your Europe — VAT One Stop Shop). So nobody should be hit with a surprise charge at the door on an EU-origin order.

What does drive the gap is freight. Malta has no road-freight route from mainland Europe — everything arrives by air or by sea via Italy — and that cost lands somewhere, either in the delivery charge or in the shelf price. That is a real structural difference, not a markup story. We have not found a credible published figure for exactly how large that island premium is, so we are not going to invent one.

The practical answer: for a single tub, local delivery thresholds often close the gap entirely, and you get it in a day or two instead of a week. For a bulk order, mainland ordering can genuinely win. Use the tables above to check rather than assuming either way.

Delivery costs at Maltese supplement shops

Delivery often matters more than the headline price on a single tub. These figures are taken from each retailer’s own published policy, and are shown exactly as they state them.

Retailer Free delivery over Otherwise Stated time
Supplements Malta €35 €5 (orders under €30) Next day, max 48 h
Malta Elite Supplements €35 €5 Next business day after dispatch
XXL Nutrition Malta Not stated Not stated 4–6 working days (ships from the Netherlands)

Two things worth flagging honestly. Supplements Malta’s own page states a €35 free-delivery minimum in one place and a €5 charge for orders “under €30” in another, which leaves a €30–€35 band unexplained — check at checkout. Gozo is usually charged separately: Supplements Malta lists an additional €8 and 3–5 days. And where a retailer does not publish a figure we have left it blank rather than guessing.

What to check before you buy

  • Compare per 100 g, then check the protein percentage. The cheapest powder per 100 g is not automatically the cheapest protein. Divide the protein per serving by the serving size.
  • Add delivery before deciding. A €3 price difference disappears against a €5 delivery charge. Check the thresholds above.
  • Buy from a seller you can identify. The counterfeit concern Maltese buyers raise is overwhelmingly about large international marketplaces with mixed third-party sellers, not about local shops with a physical presence. Buying from an identifiable retailer — local or a brand’s own store — sidesteps most of it.
  • Check the label lists what you are paying for. A protein blend padded with cheap amino acids or carbohydrate will look good per 100 g and poor per 100 g of protein. Our guide to reading a supplement label covers what to look for.

Who regulates supplements sold in Malta

Food supplements sold in Malta must be notified to the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) before being traded, with a copy of the product label, once per product per trader. The legal basis is Legal Notice 239 of 2003, which transposes the EU Food Supplements Directive 2002/46/EC. Traders also register with the Food Safety Commission, and consignments are notified to Port Health Services in advance (Environmental Health Directorate — A Focus on Food Supplements).

This is a genuine consumer protection: a product notified to the MCCAA has had its label reviewed against Maltese and EU requirements. It is a reasonable question to ask a seller you do not recognise.

How this page is put together

Prices are collected automatically from each retailer’s own public online storefront, normalised to euro per 100 g, and refreshed regularly. We record the date each listing was last checked and show it above each table. Prices change without warning, and a retailer can update theirs the minute after we read it, so treat this as a shortlist and confirm on the retailer’s own page before ordering.

We do not accept payment for placement, we do not remove competitors who beat us, and the ranking is a straight sort on price per 100 g. If you spot a listing that looks wrong — a pack size we have misread, or a price that has moved — tell us at [email protected] and we will correct it.

Price is only half the question. We also review these products on what their labels declare — protein density, what has been added, and whether free amino acids are in the mix.

Frequently asked questions

How much does whey protein cost in Malta?

It depends far more on pack size than on brand. The table on this page ranks every whey listing we track from Maltese retailers by price per 100 g, cheapest first, and shows the date each price was last checked. Larger bags are almost always better value per 100 g than small pouches, so compare on that basis rather than on the sticker price.

Is it cheaper to order supplements from Germany or the Netherlands instead of buying in Malta?

Sometimes, but less often than people assume once delivery is included. There is no customs duty and no import VAT on an order from another EU country, so there is no surprise charge at the door. The real difference is freight: Malta has no road-freight route from mainland Europe. For a single tub, local free-delivery thresholds frequently close the gap and you get it in a day or two. For a large bulk order, mainland ordering can genuinely be cheaper.

Will I pay customs or import charges on supplements delivered to Malta from the EU?

No. Malta is inside the EU customs union, so no customs duties apply to goods moving from another EU country. On EU distance sales the seller charges VAT at the destination rate and settles it through the One Stop Shop, so nothing extra is collected on delivery. Orders from outside the EU, including the UK, are a different matter and can attract charges.

Why do you compare price per 100 g instead of price per tub?

Because pack sizes in Malta range from roughly 300 g to 5 kg, and the sticker price tells you nothing about value across that range. Price per 100 g is the only comparison that holds up. Be aware it measures powder, not protein: a concentrate at about 75 percent protein and an isolate at about 90 percent will not compare like for like, so check the label too.

Do you include mass gainers in the cheapest protein table?

No, deliberately. Mass gainers and carbohydrate powders are largely maltodextrin and cost very little per 100 g, so including them would put them at the top of a cheapest-protein ranking while being an entirely different product. Excluding them keeps the comparison meaningful.

Does CapyFuel rank itself first in these tables?

No. The ranking is a straight sort on price per 100 g, and competitors who beat us appear above us. We take no payment for placement and do not remove retailers who are cheaper.

Who regulates food supplements sold in Malta?

The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority. Supplements must be notified to the MCCAA with a copy of the label before being traded, once per product per trader, under Legal Notice 239 of 2003 which transposes the EU Food Supplements Directive 2002/46/EC. Traders also register with the Food Safety Commission, and consignments are notified in advance to Port Health Services.

How often are these prices updated?

They are collected automatically from each retailer's own public storefront on a regular schedule, and the date each listing was last checked is shown above the table. Retailers can change a price at any time, so always confirm on their page before ordering.
